One of the events was a wheelbarrow race
When it was all over David helped with the take-down.
Most everyone there picked up some of the equipment and carried it the 3 blocks back to the church from the school.

Saturday, September 24, 2011Undoki
The church we attend in Kyoto has a preschool. They held their annual sports day (undoki) at a local nearby elementary school. 9:30 a.m. until 1:30 p.m. including bento lunches. Lots of races and fun contests for both the children and their parents.

The local church we attend here in Kyoto is a delight to come back to. Warm and welcoming. At the lunch time after worship we sat with a couple who are hoping to go to the US so the husband can work on a research project. The place they want to go to is WWU in Bellingham! Small world. Several years ago they lived in Pullman to attend school and had one visit to Seattle. (They had seen the movie Sleepless in Seattle and wanted to see the fish tossing at Pike Street Market) David stayed after church and attended the council meeting - just to be supportive. After more than 30 years of church council meetings I decided to miss this meeting and go for a walk!
Sunday, May 23, 2010Pentecost and a Children's Choir
Today (Sunday) is Pentecost. It received a little special treatment in the worship service this morning. Not as much as at Langley UMC. The sermon focused on the story of Pentecost and the hymns mentioned the Holy Spirit in one way or another. The choir (which sings only rarely) sang two anthems. Pastor Ozawa wore a red tie but I don't think anyone knew why. (I asked if it was in honor of the day and he confirmed that it was.) One tradition at this church is that Pentecost is always one of the four or five communion Sundays each year.
Over-all, it felt much like I remember Pentecost Sundays in the States when I was young. They took note of the day, but it was all fairly low-key. My impression is that United Church of Japan congregations generally have a fairly low-key liturgy. Saturday, May 22, 2010Philippine Lunch with Church WomenToday the cook was a Philippine woman so the menu choices were specialties from her country. Very tasty! This has become an annual gathering for the church women to get to practice English, for David and I to ask questions and to just have fun together. Sunday, May 16, 2010Church Women's meeting
The young probationary pastor preached today. I can almost sing the Gloria Patri in Japanese! Practice practice practice!
After worship today the women invited me to their meeting. I have been with them often enough now that they treat me like I am a regular member - no big fuss because I am a visitor. After singing a hymn and a short Bible study (they have read their way through the New Testament and are now reading through the Old Testament - today was Exodus 26) the business meeting began. Most of the discussion centered on the evaluation of their spring fund raising Bazaar. Prices too low? Prices to high? Weather too cold!! (It was held outside the first day of May) Much of the funds are put away for the time years from now when they will build a new church building. Before the cookie walk days we sold chili at our bazaar in Langley. The women at Murusakino church sold sushi and pickles! The men of the church had fixed a very nice lunch on Mother's Day so the women had quite a long discussion about what to fix for the men for Father's Day. They finally decided to have a table set up with many things on it and the men could choose and make their own sandwiches. I told them we would call that a Sandwich Bar. They all thought that sounded like a wonderful name - foreign, therefore fancier. So "Special Men's Sandwich Bar" will be a surprise for the men in June. It is a beautiful sunny day today. After we had come home the Pastor's wife and two other women bicycled to our house to invite us to lunch next Friday. It is fun to get to know them better each time we come and lunch with a smaller group is great for conversation. Tuesday, May 11, 2010First Sunday Worship
Yesterday was Mother's Day and Murasakino Church's Anniversary. We presented the scroll from Langley UMC and they now have it posted at the back of the sanctuary. David gave a small speech of greeting. The women have invited me to attend their Womens Meeting next Sunday. Luckily Shin San will be there to translate. However - this time I can understand much more than before - even though I cannot string enough words together to say very much.
This Sunday was special so there was a more elaborate lunch after church along with speeches and games. About 80 people including 15 plus children. Two of the kids remembered us and shyly came to say HALLO - I think the only English word they know.
